Global Warming Essays - Climate Change, Climate History, Free Essays
Global Warming Essays - Climate Change, Climate History, Free Essays Global Warming Human kind has entered a brand new relationship with the earth. The constant and increasing pressures we are exerting threaten our planets ability to sustain life itself. Change-in the way we think , and in the way we live-is needed now. Global warming is the most urgent environmental problem the world will face in the next decade and the next century. Few, if any, trends are more important to our future than climate change caused by human activities. Scientist around the world are warning us that global warming poses a major threat to our future quality of life, previously there has been little information on this problem. Right now, the rate of global warming may be 100 times faster than it has ever been. Very soon the earth may become hotter then at any time in human history. In the last decades the problems of atmospheric change have been gravely advanced by pollution resulting from human activities. These environmental changes pose a real threat to the lives of people and wild life. It is vital to all of us that we fully understand the complex relationship between the atmosphere and the earth. The earth is getting warmer. the changes are small, so far, but they are expected to grow and speed up. Within the next 50 to 100 years, the earth will continue to heat up hotter than it has been in the past million years. as oceans warm and glaciers melt, land and cities along coasts may be flooded. Heat and drought may cause forests to die and food crops to fail. Global warming will effect weather everywhere, plants and animals everywhere and people everywhere. Humans are warming the earth?s atmosphere by burning fuels, cutting down forests, and by taking part in other activities that release certain heat- trapping gasses into the air. Humans all over the world need to get together and solve these problems. In the southern hemisphere, the warming is the greatest over Australia, southern south Africa, the southern tip of south America, and the area of Antarctica near Australia. In the northern hemisphere, warming is strongest in Alaska, northwest and eastern Canada, most of the Soviet Union, and parts of Southern Asia, North Africa and south west Europe. Climate has cooled in Great Britain and northern and eastern Europe. In the USA scientists found no overall warming trend in weather records kept since the nineteenth century, however keep in mind the United States covers only 1.5 percent of the earth?s surface. As warming continues, every place on the earth will be effected. In the frozen heart of the last ice age, 18,000 years ago, the temperature was only about nine degrees Fahrenheit colder then today. So a change of a few degrees can have a dramatic effects. Todays most sophisticated climatic models estimate the global temperature will rise between 3 and 9 degrees Fahrenheit in the next century. This could occur as early as the year 2050. Here are the large scale changes the rise might bring: As water warms it expands, taking up more space. So warmer ocean water, with added melt-water from glaciers, will rise by twenty inches to five feet in the next 50 to 100 years. Just a 1 foot rise in sea level can cause shorelines to recede a hundred feet, and in flat terrain, a thousand feet. If ocean waters rise several feet, whole beaches could wash away. Many homes, hotels, other buildings, and entire cities will be threatened. Salt water will pollute freshwater wells that millions of people use for drinking water. Coastal marshes, which are vital nurseries for fish and other ocean life will be endangered. Along undeveloped coast, marshes may survive because they can move inland with the rising waters. In many places seawalls and other human structures will prevent this process and the marshes will be destroyed. In the United States ocean water may cover the Florida Keys and large parts of southern Florida and Louisiana. Two kinds of action are called for. One is to take steps to prepare for the the effects of warming that already have begun. Agricultural scientist must develop varieties of wheat and other crops that can grow in a longer but drier growing season. Ways must be fond to

Eurozone Financial Crisis Literature review Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words - 1
Eurozone Financial Crisis - Literature review Example According to David Brat, the primary causes for the occurrence of the financial crisis is due to a lack of regulation, bad investment decisions, historically low-interest rates and major shocks to the economy (Brat 1). David Brat also stated that the housing crisis is caused by the government by forcing mortgage investors. Nick Timiraos tries to present the viewpoint of Brat in the journal. The paper of Brat also focuses on the largest mortgage lender on the nation which is Countrywide Financial Corporation. The author illustrated that loss in one corner of the mortgage market of the U.S. leads to the cause of the major recession. Moreover, this cause has fallen in the financial system in a broader way. The fresh evidence from the data has been discussed by Joe Parkinson in the journal ââ¬Å"Euro crisis hits emerging Europe. The manufacturing activity of some of the emerging nations such as the Czech Republic, Poland, etc. sunk into the weakest level (Parkinson 1). The paradox of fi nancial crises by Timothy F. Geithner is based on the devastating impact of financial crises (Geithner 1). It has been estimated that in the year 2008, 16% of the wealth of American Household has been lost. Moreover, the rate of unemployment rose to 25%. Geithner tries to present the outcome terrifying autumn of 2008. The foundation of the financial crisis has been effectively incorporated in the three articles to provide vivid knowledge to the readers about the outcome of the crisis. Some of the key issues provided by author Daniel Harari on regarding the cause of financial crisis are misdirected assessment of risks, trade imbalances, and economic divergence. Member of the European Central Bank, Peter Praet states that the collapse of the mortgage market in the United States lead to the start of the Euro financial crisis. Moreover, the author also reveals that financial derivative products are a complex network and held globally. This is the reason which leads to the start of the fi nancial crisis which stated by David Brat and presented on the journal by Nick Timiraos. Two of the key problems of the Euro zone crisis problem are lost competitiveness, deficits and debt.

Making Sense of the Size of the Universe Assignment
Making Sense of the Size of the Universe - Assignment Example The 21st century man believes that he may have to share the universe with other beings in other planets. On the other hand, one who has not heard of the latest discoveries would think he owns the universe; thus, making him feel very special and significant. One does not think that the religious views and beliefs should be updated now that new discoveries are unearthed. Religion is a matter of faith. It should not be based on any scientific finding. Religion is oneââ¬â¢s relationship with God, the Supreme Being. Even if there are other beings in the universe, one must still believe and trust that he is special in Godââ¬â¢s eyes. One may choose to believe that even the other beings in the other galaxies are also special to God. Christianity need not be updated because of these new discoveries because Christianity is not based on the number of planets, stars or galaxies. It is very hard, if not impossible to reconcile science with religion. The vastness of the universe cannot dictate upon any individual a change in faith. The universe, the stars, the galaxies are not the core of oneââ¬â¢s existence. An individualââ¬â¢s existence and significance is determined by his own view of life and his belief on the Creator who made him p art of the

A review of literature available regarding the Black church and the involvement of the church in the community reveals a pattern of strong involvement of the church in the community. African presence in the Bible shows a clear participation in the early Church as well as a respect for African involvement. The early history of the church, as well as its mid-20th century involvement in the civil rights movement, sets a precedent for community involvement in secular matters for the church of today. Modern involvement of the Black church in secular life and the wider community touches all aspects of secular life, including physical and mental health of its parishioners, youth advocacy and youth programs, economic development, community volunteering, and literacy. Additionally, more traditional areas of pastoral involvement, such as bereavement counseling, may have some overlap with secular counseling due to increasing involvement in secular mental health providers in life events previously handled in a primarily pastoral manner. BIBLICAL CONTEXT Blacks have a strong presence in the Bible, and there is no evidence of the modern idea of racial inferiority to other peoples in the writings. Both Old Testament and New Testament writings refer to Africans who were highly placed, and do not show any evidence of the discrimination or enslavement African Americans have faced. ââ¬Å"When Israel was a child, then I loved him, and called my son out of Egyptâ⬠(Hosea 11:1) The Queen of Sheba was a notable Biblical African; she was treated as an equal and given full honors as a head of state. ââ¬Å"And she came to Jerusalem with a very great train, with camels that bare spices, and very much gold, and precious stones: and when she was come to Solomon, she communed with him all that was in her heartâ⬠(1 Kings 10:2) The genealogy of Jesus Christ in Matthew lists several African women ââ¬â ââ¬Å"And Salmon begat Booz of Rachab; and Booz begat Obed of Ruth; and Obed begat Jesse;â⬠(Matthew 1:5) Rachab and Ruth were African women, as was Thamar. The gathering of Jews at Pentacost related in Acts included those of African origin. ââ¬Å"Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judaea, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia, Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of ibya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes, Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God. â⬠(Acts 2:9-2:11). Two of the teachers at Antioch were also African ââ¬â ââ¬Å"Now there were in the church that was at Antioch certain prophets and teachers; as Barnabas, and Simeon that was called Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene, and Manaen, which had been brough up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saulâ⬠(Acts 13:1). Of these teachers, Simeon (called Niger, Latin for ââ¬Å"the blackâ⬠) and Lucius of Cyrene were African. The wealth of African presence and importance in the Bible makes it clear that the African American church has a strong Biblical precedent. HISTORICAL CONTEXT The African church was active and important in the history of the early church. The Synod of Hippo, held in 393 in Hippo Regius (corresponding to northern Algeria) was instrumental in forming Christianity as we know it today; that is where the first canon of the New Testament was approved. Several other synods were also held in Hippo Regius, as well as councils in Carthage and Alexandria (Hendrickson, 2002, 320). Egypt and Algeria were centers of Christian worship. Major historical events in Christianity, including the Reformation, spread Christianity further into Africa. When Africans were captured and sent to the New World as slaves, they brought with them a melange of religious practice, including Christianity, native religions and others. The black church in America was established during the 1700s, during which time many African Americans were still suffering under the yoke of slavery. The first uniquely black church, the African Methodist Episcopal Church in Philadelphia, was established by Richard Allen in 1816; membership in the new denomination exploded, reaching almost 6,000 members by 1820 and spreading to the south and west quickly (Simms, 2000, 101). The Black Methodist church immediately took on the characteristic role of the black church, fighting oppression and slavery, providing loans and business advice and other social services to their worshippers (Simms, 2000, 101). The church was instrumental in abolishing slavery; David Walkerââ¬â¢s work ââ¬Å"Appeal to the Coloured Citizens of the Worldâ⬠, published in 1829, which castigated the institution of slavery and used Scriptural quotation and traditional Christian morals to prove the immorality of slavery and the moral bankruptcy of the slave owners, provided a galvanizing force to the Abolitionist movement as well as encouragement to those still enslaved (Simms, 2000, 102). Simms relates the spread of the Black church throughout America to the exodus of Southern blacks at the start of World War I; given a sudden chance at employment and expansion, Southern blacks moved north into the industrial heartlands of Michigan, Illinois and Indiana as well as into the Northeast, and they brought their religion along with them. One notable congregation was the Abyssinian Baptist Church of Harlem, which provided political, social and economic support to its 14,000 members (2003, 102). Blum remarks on the position of the church in the Black community, ââ¬Å"the Black church has been the enduring center and focal point of Black communities and the refuge from racism and povertyâ⬠¦ the church provided Blacks with a shelter, and indeed, was the most significant of all Black institutions (1993, 609)â⬠. At the time the Black church differentiated from white denominations, slavery and oppression against Blacks was rife. The churchââ¬â¢s establishment was a form of protest against the ruling white majority and a spiritual refuge from the larger world. Because the congregants of the Black church have never had the luxury of a coherent, secular social support structure, the church has taken on the role of social caregiver as well as spiritual caregiver. According to Gadzekpo (2001, 609), the church had from its inception a distinct, African-American culture, and was not an attempt to mimic the white church as is often assumed. ââ¬Å"The major aspect of Black Christian belief was freedomâ⬠¦ for the African in America as a slave, it meant release from bondage; after emancipation, it meant education, employment and freedom of movement for the ââ¬Å"Negroâ⬠, and for the past forty years it has meant social, political and economic justice for the African-American (2001, 609). â⬠According to Gadzekpo, a call to Godââ¬â¢s service was seen as a call to freedom; it is a basic tenet of the Black Christian church that God wants Black Christians to be free because they, too, are made in his own image. The involvement of the Black church in the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s was notable, not only because church leaders precipitated a major change in the secular culture, but because it set a pattern of involvement of the church in secular matters, including political, social and health. Leonard Gadzekpo discusses the involvement of the Black church in the civil rights movement. He states: One may present the Black church as an institution that gives some direction to the aforementioned aspects of African-American life and influences them, particularly in American society at large. The core values of Black culture ââ¬â such as freedom, justice, equality, an African heritage and racial parity in all aspects of human life ââ¬â were inherent in the Christian ethos that gave birth to and nurtured the civil rights movement. (2001, 609). With the founding doctrine of the Black church being religious, political and physical freedom, the involvement of the church in the civil rights movement was inevitable. Likewise, involvement of the church in the political and social problems that African-Americans face today is inevitable. As Gadzekpo notes, â⬠¦ the Black church, therefore, has reached the point in the last decade of the twentieth century in which searing demands are being made for a return to the tradition of self-help and agitationâ⬠¦ the development of new and creative approaches has become commonplace in the face of internal pressures involving changes within African-American society, external pressures involving prevalent and persistent racism, and the hostile environment in which the church exists. (2001, 610) The history and current position of the church within the Black community clearly indicate that there is a need for involvement of the church in secular matters as well as spiritual, and that the church, by providing this involvement, would be continuing the tradition of service which the church was founded in. However, as Simms notes, the church struggles with the bifurcation of the black community. More affluent blacks who have managed to escape the traditional economic and social confines of the African American experience have not remained within the church to continue to support its mission. The modern black church is a divided entity, rather than a united whole, which weakens its efforts and causes difficulty in determining its path (Simms, 2000, 105).

Nintendo The Survivor Essay -- Video Games Nintendo Essays
Nintendo the Survivor à à à à à "Work hard, but in the end it's in heaven's hands." This is a quote from Game Over about the meaning of the word "Nintendo." In the video-gaming market, though, it was really in consumers' hands. Nintendo has always needed to adapt to survive in the market. Nintendo always needed to be on top; it was a company that needed to be ahead of the rest. Nintendo had to set new standards, or improve on an existing product or idea. à à à à à The Dutch and Portuguese first brought their card games over to Japan 355 years ago. For the longest time, the kuruta (playing cards) in Japan were Dutch and Portuguese. Fusajiro Yamauchi came along and integrated the cards into existing Japanese games that originally used clams and stones. Fusajiro called these cards Hanafuda (flower cards), and many varieties of games were made using these cards (Game Over). In 1889, Fusajiro founded his own playing card company (Company History). Using the Japanese Kanji characters - nin, ten and do - Fusajiro named his company Nintendo (Game Over). As quoted from the book Game Over, the Kanji characters Nintendo meant "Deep in mind we have to do whatever we have to do," or even "Work hard, but in the end it is in Heaven's hands." à à à à à To gain more business, Nintendo needed to reach other regions of Japan. To do so, Fusajiro decided to have symbols painted on the cards that reflect the characteristics of various regions of Japan. Nintendo then signed up with tobacco shops to sell the Nintendo Hanafuda easily around the nation. All was doing modestly well until the Yakuza showed up. The Yakuza, the Japanese equivalent to the Mafia, set up many gambling parlors in Japan. Hanafuda were used for a variety of card games in these parlors, and like in casinos: new games were started with new decks. With these bustling gambling parlors going through so many Nintendo brand playing cards, Nintendo profited handsomely (Game Over). à à à à à In 1907, Nintendo started manufacturing western-style playing cards for bringing out a wider variety of card games from the United States of America. In 1927, Nintendo started to put fancy backing on the cards (they were originally blank). In 1949, Nintendo's current president, Hiroshi Yamauchi, came into office (Game Over). Four years later Nintendo became the first company in Japan to manufacture plastic-coated cards. This was done to... ...d a little more excitement to its new system. Nintendo started to release Game Boy Color Games that featured four to five Game & Watch games. à à à à à Nintendo has come a long way. From selling trading cards in Japan in 1889 to planning a state-of-the-art video game systems for the millennium. Nintendo changes to meet the demands of their customers, so that they will continue to buy Nintendo products. In the end, Nintendo always seems to come out on top with setting a new standard in the video game systems industry. Nintendo is a survivor and a revolutionist. à à à à à To the best of my knowledge, the information above and below is correct. The information above contain some editorial wording. The information below may be slightly incomplete, there were other Nintendo Power references I could not track; The book Game Over contains many other references. Ethics: Who Am I
Who am I? Well to answer this question you have to answer these questions first. What are my shortcomings, do I have any vices Iââ¬â¢d like to eliminate, why is it hard and whatââ¬â¢s stopping me, what are my favorite activities, and a few others. But the one Iââ¬â¢m going to focus on is ââ¬Å"What are my qualities and strengths? â⬠because this question helped me figure out what Iââ¬â¢m going to do for a living. What are my qualities and strengths? I have many strengths like the ability to work on cars, carpentry, art, and mathematics. But my biggest strength is in mathematics. Iââ¬â¢ve always been at the top of my math class throughout my schooling career. Every time m teacher would put a problem on the board, Iââ¬â¢d have it done in a split second. I never felt I was challenged until the middle of my junior year of high school. I was taking Algebra 2 and we were starting to go more in-depth into x and y-intercepts. This concept boggled my mind for a lot longer than it had taken to go over and to tell you the truth I still donââ¬â¢t get all of it but I knew enough of it to get by. There was always one thing that Iââ¬â¢ve wondered about my strength in mathematics, though. Where did I get this skill from? Nobody in my family is or ever was this good at math like I am. To this day I donââ¬â¢t where it came from but I guess thatââ¬â¢s one of my own wonders of the world. Why am I? This question would be difficult for someone to answer if all they thought about was there profession in the future and not what they want to achieve in there life. To answer this question you have to have thought about what you want to achieve in life then you canââ¬â¢t answer this question. A lot of people think about what they want to achieve in life but most of everyone always ponder it in the sense of there career. Thatââ¬â¢s a good way to think about it but that doesnââ¬â¢t give you purpose in life. Iââ¬â¢m not going to lie a lot of the things I ant to achieve in life are career related, but there are a few things that are personal goals Iââ¬â¢m going to strive to achieve. One of these achievements is to have a great family and raise children that will have a love of learning, not just in schooling because not all kids like school but in whatever they love to do, a hunger for success, be great citizens of the United States, and know how to be a respectful adult, which is one thing I think a lot of the youth in my generation lack. I think these traits are extremely important for young people to have because these traits are what I think make up a great person and this world definitely needs more people that are respectful, knowledgeable, well-mannered; just an all around good person. Well this is just a little on ââ¬Å"Who I amâ⬠in the sense of my strengths and qualities and ââ¬Å"Why I amâ⬠in the sense of my purpose in life.

Support Group For East Asian Students - 1343 Words
Support Group for East and South East Asian Students in Counseling Program Ya-Chen Tsai University of North Texas Support Group for East and South East Asian Students in Counseling Program According to U.S. Census Bureau (n.d.), East and Southeast Asian Americans is largely a result of the huge influx of immigrants from Asia, it stood at nearly ten million of the total U.S. population and nearly seven out of ten Asian Americans were born in Asia. One out of ten people living in the United States will be able to trace the ancestry in part or in full to Asian countries by 2050. This group is comparatively new to other immigration groups and have experienced strong oppressions such as anti-Asian sentiment, Immigration Act of 1924,â⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Moreover, the value of students from this background, such as second generation immigrants and international students, is not always acknowledged or appreciated (Peterson, Briggs, Dreasher, Horner, Nelson, 1999). In addition to acculturative stress, they often encounter serious language, financial, psychological, and institutional barrier s while in the school and receive very limited support (Mori, 2000). However, students from East and Southeast Asia have wealth of experiences, opinions, and cultural traditions that could contribute and expand the eyesight in both research and teaching, as well as the potential to enrich the university community (Delgado-Romero Wu, 2010). Social justice work with clients is valued by counseling programs; however, the unjust social dynamics of their own students is replicated. Even though counseling programs often promote that they value diversity, multiculturalism, and social justice, students from East and Southeast Asia still face additional barriers, such as cultural value conflict with clients and Western theoretical approaches, and cross-cultural supervision issues (Delgado-Romero Wu, 2010). According to Dipeolu, Jinhee, Cooper (2007), support group treatment offers many advantages and can enhance the health and sense of well-being. There are several reasons that support group can beneficial those students. Firstly, group provides supportive context for students to discuss adjustment concerns and further
